I-16 was called Mosca (by the Republicans) and Rata (by the Nationalists) in the Spanish Civil War. It remains unclear what Mosca means. The meaning can be either "a fly" or it can be a derivative of the word Moscú (Moscow in Spanish) where I-16 were manufactured.
