The L-39 is a single engine all metal low wing monoplane with seats arranged in tandem. It is powered by an AI-25 TL turbofan engine with 16.87 kN static thrust. The fuselage is a classical semi monocoque structure and consists of two detachable sections. The nose section is covered by removable hoods.
The wing is throughgoing, it has a trapezoidal shape. The wing is geometrically free of a twist and it has a modified NACA 64 A 012 profile. Wingtip tanks are a standard part of the wing configuration and they increase the effective wing aspect ratio to 5.2. Balanced ailerons carry flettners, the left one acting as a trim tab controlled by an electromotor. Double slotted lift flaps can be extended by a single hydraulic cylinder to 25 or 44 degrees. A pair of aerodynamic brakes is installed on the wing bottom near the aircraft centre line. The air brakes can be extended to a maximum angle of 55 degrees.
