Z-142 aircraft manufacturer: Moravan Otrokovice. Zlin Z-142 aircraft is the continuation of the Z-40 type series. It is the innovated Z-42 M aircraft.
The Z-142 aircraft is intended for elementary and advanced pilot training and performance. With supplementary equipmnet the aicraft is airworthy for aerotows and for trainig by night and blind flights.
The Z-142 aircraft is a two seater, single engined low wing monoplane. It is powered by a six-cylinder inline inverted M 337 AK engine driving a metal hydraulic automatic pitch V 500 A propeller.
Fuselage is of mixed structure. The central supporting part of the fuselage of the framework type is welded of steel tubes and is covered with a fibreglass body. The rear part is a sheet semi-monocoque. The pilots' seats alow the use of the back type parachutes. The seats in side by side arrangemnt are adjustable in 4 positions. Behind the seats there is the luggage compartment. The cockpit enclosure is opened by sliding it forward and is equipped for the emergency release. Sliding cockpit enclosure makes cockpit entering and leaving easy.
The all metal wing includes a main spar and an auxiliary spar. The wing structure is split near the fuselage. It has a rectangular plan form. The wing covering is of duralumin sheet clad with aluminium. The slotted all metal ailerons and wing flaps are equal in size.
Landing gear has three wheels and consists of the main landing gear and the nose gear. Main gear includes flat steel springs attached to the spar of the centre section of the wing. The main gear wheels are equipped with hydraulic disk brakes with automatic backlash elimination. The braking plates which are located on the foot control pedals actuate the brakes of the main gear separately. The parking brake actuates simultaneously both main wheel brakes. Nose gear is provided with a hydropneumatic shock absorber and with a shimmy damper. The wheel is steerable through pedal of the foot control up to the angular displacement of 30 degrees.
The left hand M 337 AK engine is a piston, four stroke, air cooled, inverted inline six cylinder with valve gear and camshaft on the cylinder heads, with a low pressure fuel injection into the space in front of the suction valves. The engine has no reduction gear unit. It includes a charging compressor and is capable of earobatics and inverted flight. The V 500 A propeller is a two bladed hydraulic automatic pitch constant speed unit. Propeller blades are made of duralumin.

Load due enables full aerobatic operation in A category with two pilots on board and fuel for 1 hour of flight (G=970 kg; n= +6; -3.5), aerobatic operation in U category with two pilots on board and with full main tanks (G=1020 kg; n= +5; -3), increased flight range in N category using the auxiliary tanks with the maximum possible supplementary radio equipment etc. (G=1090 kg).Main fuel tanks 2 x 60 litres, auxiliary tanks 2 x 50 litres using aircraft petrol min. oct. No 78 or other types of aircraft petrol.
